Great Chelsea Fire (second) occurs.
October 14, 1973
The fire destroys 300 buildings, levels 18 blocks (one-fifth of the city), and displaces some 1,000 residents, but no one is killed. Fire departments in Boston and 600 other communities respond to calls for assistance. The fire started only 150 yards from the site of the 1908 fire that destroyed much of the city.
